Ballymany

Proposals for Ballymany have focused on creating an integrated neighbourhood and a sense of place and identity. The new ‘edge condition’ proposed will be a dramatic and positive change from the rear gardens that turn their back on the views to the Curragh and the M7. A high quality three storey arc of rhythmic buildings that define the edge at a scale appropriate to the context. The exposed rear garden walls are improved by containing and balancing these with rear gardens behind. This increases the security and amenity of private spaces and the quality of public spaces.

Inspired by housing from an earlier time, we identify the quality of space created by the formality and ordered geometry of Georgian Squares and Victorian workers’ housing. The Curragh Camp offers an example of these formal spaces that have inspired our designs. We have carefully prepared this proposal to combine this elegance while using most recent thinking about car management so that it can deliver high quality public spaces that can really be safely enjoyed by all the inhabitants. Strong building lines, a very carefully considered carparking strategy and a high regard for the role of landscape design and planning in the urban realm has created a vision for Ballymany that encompasses an appropriately high density of mixed scale development, within a green streetscape.

The proposal seeks to create a lasting piece of the town where community can happen fuelled by the density of inhabitants, a place that feels urban while providing really useable shared green spaces.
