ROSCREA

Selected as one of four winning projects from over 100 entries in the RIAI Town Centre Living Competition, the proposal is designed to integrate seamlessly with Roscrea’s existing character. It introduces a series of small, interlinked public spaces grafted onto the town’s established urban fabric.

Addressing a fragmented edge-of-town condition, the scheme responds to the existing masterplan and proposes a "mini-landmark" on a prominent corner, creating a local destination that reconnects to the main street via existing pedestrian routes.

Three new public spaces are created:

An active streetscape along Gantly Road, with trees and seating to encourage public use.

A new urban plaza at the junction of Gantly Road and Chapel Lane, providing direct access to the central courtyard.

A courtyard offering a new public open space for the town.

The design draws inspiration from Roscrea’s rich tradition of urban housing, such as the residential streets at Limerick Street. Typologies characteristic of Irish towns, including oblique corner buildings and undercroft access to laneways, have strongly influenced the scheme’s development.

This medium density, medium rise proposal achieves approximately 58 dwellings per hectare while providing own-door access to all homes.
